The Duke of Edinburgh award is offered to our year 9, year 10 and 11 pupils. Currently, pupils are achieving the Bronze level award with the opportunity to progress and achieve the Silver award. The course develops our pupils’ life skills and personal independence. 

All Duke of Edinburgh pupils are taught:

  • Navigation skills
  • Map reading and grid references
  • Compass reading skills

All pupils are required to complete a two day expedition with an overnight stay. In preparation for the expedition component pupils are taught:

  • Pre-expedition fitness training
  • How to prepare and cook nutritionally balanced meals
  • How to cook on a Trangia stove
  • Organising and packing a backpack
  • Camp craft-assembling a tent
  • First aid training resulting in a ‘Basic First Aid Qualification’

All pupils are required to complete a Bike Maintenance Course. The course covers:

  • Bike Maintenance
  • Bike Safety
  • Controlling a bike over a variety of terrains

Finally, all pupils are required to complete a volunteering component, they volunteer alongside the Bay Trust staff at the Pine Gardens located in St. Margaret’s Bay.
