Elms School is a day special school for pupils aged 5 - 16 years, recognised as 'outstanding in every aspect' following an OfSTED Inspection in April 2009. Under the 'Special Schools Review' it was re-designated in September 2004, catering for pupils with a combination of 'Behaviour and Learning' (B&L) and a percentage of primary pupils with 'Social Emotional and Mental Health' (SEMH).
The majority of pupils are from the Dover, Deal and Sandwich area, but some are admitted from Shepway, Thanet, East Kent and Mid Kent. The B&L pupils have further associated behaviour difficulties such as ADHD, adolescent psychiatric problems, attachment disorder issues and challenging behaviour. The SEMH pupils have deep-seated and long-term emotional needs, but are functioning at a higher academic level.
The majority of Pupils have general learning difficulties in most curriculum areas, and are likely to experience a combination of low self-esteem and confidence together with a significant degree of social and emotional immaturity often associated with language delay, and display emotional vulnerability and disruptive behaviour.
We have an impressive building and specialist rooms and resources which includes a Sports Hall, ICT Suite and Specialist rooms for Design & Technology, Science, Art, Music and Food Technology. Two more recent additions include an English & Media Suite and the Outside Learning Zone (outdoor gym, fitness/agility trail, zip line & climbing wall).
